Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri has many legends related to it..

One of the most famous is about shiv and parvati marriage... on this auspicious night shiv and parvati got married... so in our language we can call them their wedding anniversary....

Some people belive that on this auspicious night shiva had performed Tandav the danve of primal creation, preservation and distruction.....

Another legends says that it was on the day of shivratri that lord shiva manifested himself into the LINGA.....

Whatever may be the reason i just know ont thig that on shivratri there is always a big satsang by some great personality.... and this yr tht great personality is Vikram Hazra..... Around 10,000 are expected for the satsang in the evening.... at dahisar.... do join in.. if u can't come due to some reason then do watch sanskar channel frm 5.9 in the evening.. Guruji's satsang and rudra puja will be telecasted live from Kolam....

Just dont Miss it....

Love,

FAMILY

Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days.

But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family, an unwise investment indeed, don't you think? So what is behind the story?
Do you know what the word FAMILY means?

Letter from a mouse thats learning to roar!

I got this in the mail today and i couldn’t resist putting it here… Enjoy!

Dear Mr. Prime minister
I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local train compartment which has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse. Mouse at least squeak but we don’t even do that.
Today I heard your speech. In which you said ‘NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED’.
I would like to remind you that fourteen years has passed since serial bomb blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main conspirator. Till today he is not caught. All our bollywood actors, our builders, our Gutka king meets him but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple; all your ministers are hand in glove with him. If any attempt is made to catch him everybody will be exposed. Your statement ‘NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED’ is nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate people of India.
Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attack carried out by about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing continues days are not away when terrorist will attack by air, destroy our nuclear reactor and there will be one more Hiroshima.
We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You promised Mumbaikar Shanghai what you have given us is Jalianwala Baug.
Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick out this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi family. Loyalty to Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent people, isn’t it?
I am born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the politician, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray, Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money.
Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief minister I have seen. His only business is to increase the FSI every other day, make money and send it to Delhi so Congress can fight next election. Now the clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fisherman so they can build concrete house right on sea shore. Next time terrorist can comfortably live in those house, enjoy the beauty of sea and then attack the Mumbai at their will.
Recently I had to purchase house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen builders.
Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI you and your finance minister are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? To the underworld isn’t it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time please come to me, I will tell you everything.
If this has been land of fools, idiots then I would not have ever cared to write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side we are reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side you politician has converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, Creamy Schedule caste only what I am not is INDIAN. You politician have raped every part of mother India by your policy of divide and rule.
Take example of former president Abdul Kalam. Such a intelligent person, such a fine human being. You politician didn’t even spare him. Your party along with opposition joined the hands, because politician feels they are supreme and there is no place for good person.
Dear Mr Prime minister you are one of the most intelligent person, most learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR!!
First and foremost expose all selfish politician. Ask Swiss bank to give name of all Indian account holder. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find wolf among us. There will be political upheaval but that will better than dance of death which we are witnessing every day. Just give us ambient where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of law.
Everything else will be taken care of.
Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?

The Master’s hand

A story… some sites claim that its fiction… I prefer to believe that it actually happened, if not with Paderewski, then some other great pianist :)…
Wishing to encourage her young son’s progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.”
When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.
Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy was sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy’s ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.”

Then, leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was so mesmerized they couldn’t recall what else the great master played. Only the classic “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”
That’s the way it is with Guruji… and God what we can accomplish on our own may not be noteworthy. We do our best, but the results may not be exactly graceful flowing music. But with the hand of the Master, our life’s work can be transformed from the merely mundane to the truly beautiful.
Next time you set out to accomplish something big, and things are not working exactly the way you wanted them to, listen carefully. You will hear a voice whispering in your ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.”
I emphasize the word “play”!

Stupid Mind

Small little momentary pleasures hold us back. We miss something. Its the pleasure that binds us, not the pain. The pleasure hungry mind just goes on and on with the same old patterns. I am tired of this now. The mind is very sneaky and sticky. It sneaks out and sticks to something, trying hard to squeeze out some juice from something apparently juicy. It hopelessly fails every single time and yet it goes on and on.The funniest part is that the mind keeps on fooling itself all the time and yet we are stuck to it, so bothered and feverish in anticipation of a so called pleasant experience! Vasistha says, "Foolishness invites sorrow. Foolishness is bondage. O holy one! One who is bound thinks he is free in his foolishness! Though all that exists in the three worlds is but the self, to one who is firmly established in foolishness all that is but the expansion of foolishness".Its high time that I just sit back and laugh..silently.

Jatin.

Save Our Economy

**U CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO THE INDIAN ECONOMY BY FOLLOWING FEW SIMPLE STEPS. *

Please spare a couple of minutes here........ for the sake of India ... our country.

I got this article from one of my friend, but it's true, I can see this from day to day life, Small example Before 5 months 1 CAN $ = IND Rs 32 After 5 months. Now it is 1 CAN $ = IND Rs 52 Do you think Canadian Economy is booming?

No, but Indian Economy is Going Down. Our Economy is in u'r hands INDIAN economy is in a crisis. Our country like many other ASIAN countries is undergoing a severe economic crunch. Many INDIAN industries are closing down. The INDIAN economy is in a crisis and if we do not take proper steps to control those, we will be in a critical situation. More than 30000 crore rupees of foreign exchange are being siphoned out of our country on products such as cosmetics, snacks, tea, beverages... etc which are grown, produced and consumed here . A cold drink that costs only 70 / 80 paisa to produce is sold for NINE rupees, and a major chunk of profits from these are sent abroad. This is a serious drain on INDIAN economy. 'COCA COLA 'and' SPRITE ' belong to the same multinational company, 'COCA COLA'? Coke advertisements says ' JO CHAHO HOJAYE, COCACOLA ENJOY' (Whatever the hell, let it happen, you drink coke) What can you do? You can consider some of the better alternatives to aerated drinks. You can drink LEMON JUICE, FRESH FRUIT JUICES, CHILLED LASSI (SWEET OR SOUR), BUTTER MILK, COCONUT WATER, JALJEERA, ENERJEE, MASALA MILK........ .. Everyone deserves a healthy drink, including you! Over and above all this, economic sanctions have been imposed on us. We have nothing against Multinational companies, but to protect our own interests we request everybody to use INDIAN products only for next two years. With the rise in petrol prices, if we do not do this, the rupee will devalue further and we will end up paying much more for the same products in the near future. What you can do about it? 1 .. Buy only products manufactured by WHOLLY INDIAN COMPANIES. 2 .. ENROLL as many people as possible for this cause. Each individual should become a leader for this awareness. This is the only way to save our country from severe economic crisis. You don't need to give-up your lifestyle. You just need to choose an alternate product. All categories of products are available from WHOLLY INDIAN COMPANIES. LIST OF PRODUCTS BATHING SOAP: USE - CINTHOL & OTHER GODREJ BRANDS, SANTOOR, WIPRO SHIKAKAI, MYSORE SANDAL, MARGO, NEEM, EVITA, MEDIMIX, GANGA , NIRMA BATH & CHANDRIKA INSTEAD OF - LUX, LIFEBOY, REXONA, LIRIL, DOVE, PEARS, HAMAM, LESANCY, CAMAY, PALMOLIVE TOOTH PASTE: USE - NEEM, BABOOL, PROMISE, VICO VAJRADANTI, PRUDENT, DABUR PRODUCTS, MISWAK INSTEAD OF - COLGATE, CLOSE UP, PEPSODENT, CIBACA, FORHANS, MENTADENT . TOOTH BRUSH: USE - PRUDENT, AJANTA , PROMISE INSTEAD OF - COLGATE, CLOSE UP, PEPSODENT, FORHANS, ORAL-B SHAVING CREAM: USE - GODREJ, EMANI INSTEAD OF - PALMOLIVE, OLD SPICE, GILLETE BLADE: USE - SUPERMAX, TOPAZ, LAZER, ASHOKA INSTEAD OF - SEVEN-O -CLOCK, 365 , GILLETTE TALCUM POWDER: USE - SANTOOR, GOKUL, CINTHOL, WIPRO BABY POWDER, BOROPLUS INSTEAD OF - PONDS, OLD SPICE, JOHNSON BABY POWDER, SHOWER TO SHOWER MILK POWDER: USE - INDIANA , AMUL, AMULYA INSTEAD OF - ANIKSPRAY, MILKANA, EVERYDAY MILK, MILKMAID. SHAMPOO: USE - LAKME, NIRMA, VELVET INSTEAD OF - HALO, ALL CLEAR, NYLE, SUNSILK, HEAD AND SHOULDERS, PANTENE MOBILE CONNECTIONS USE - BSNL, AIRTEL INSTEAD OF - HUTCH Every INDIAN product you buy makes a big difference. It saves INDIA . Let us take a firm decision today. BUY INDIAN TO BE INDIAN we are not against of foreign products. WE ARE NOT ANTI-MULTINATIONAL. WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE OUR NATION. EVERY DAY IS A STRUGGLE FOR A REAL FREEDOM. WE ACHIEVED OUR INDEPENDENCE AFTER LOSING MANY LIVES. THEY DIED PAINFULLY TO ENSURE THAT WE LIVE PEACEFULLY. THE CURRENT TREND IS VERY THREATENING. MULTINATIONALS CALL IT GLOBALISATION OF INDIAN ECONOMY. FOR INDIANS LIKE YOU AND ME IT IS RECOLONISATION OF INDIA .. THE COLONIST'S LEFT INDIA THEN. BUT THIS TIME THEY WILL MAKE SURE THEY DON'T MAKE ANY MISTAKES. WHO WOULD LIKE TO LET A' GOOSE THAT LAYS GOLDEN EGGS' SLIP AWAY. PLEASE REMEMBER: POLITICAL FREEDOM IS USELESS WITHOUT ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE . RUSSIA , S.KOREA , MEXICO ..........THE LIST IS VERY LONG!! LET US LEARN FROM THEIR EXPERIENCE AND FROM OUR HISTORY. LET US DO THE DUTY OF EVERY TRUE INDIAN. FINALLY: IT'S OBVIOUS THAT U CAN'T GIVE UP ALL OF THE ITEMS MENTIONED ABOVE, SO GIVE UP ATLEAST ONE ITEM TO FOR THE SAKE OF OUR COUNTRY. We would be sending useless forwards to our friends daily. Instead please forward this mail to all your friends to create awareness.

My First DSN

I just completed my 1sy DSN(Divya Samaj ka Nirman). At the early stage I was not ready to take this course as it was taking complete 3 days and the fee was 3000rs. Now it’s too much. But ne ways coz my teachers told me to do it I applied for it and finally reached the venue on time.
After reaching there I found myself more and more enthusiastic for knowing about the course. Then the mentor enters the room. U know who it was???? It was BAWA….. This was the main reason I had agreed for the course. Staying with bawa for 3 days... ohh man… excellent…..

The course started and yes it’s not as easy as I thought… but that’s not the reason to not do the course in fact coz it’s tough everyone should do the course…. One thing I would like to tell u guys after doing the course there will b no barriers in your life… nothing can stop u from doing the good things in life…

It has helped me to break all my boundaries and go beyond myself to serve the society. Now I can quit my old habits and do anything and everything for the improvement of the society. And at this stage I realized that 3000 bucks is nothing yaar… it is much more worth than 3000… an staying with bawa and dinesh dada was a great experience…

So guys next DSN just don’t stop… whatever may be the reason just keep it aside for 3 days and go for the course… and ha if u also think u have cash problem start saving 10 bucks everyday from now….

Ecological Footprint

So many talks about Global warming, Extinction of species, Deforestation, and so many more things concerning the environment. We mainly think all of these are mainly due to industries, cars, some poachers and fisherman doing lots of hunting, and many other people. But do you know how much our lifestyle affects the environment???Enter : Ecological footprint. Like every step you take on a sand or any soft land surface leaves your footprint behind. The way we live, buy stuff, travel.... makes a hell lot of difference to the environment. It leaves a mark on our fragile planet. Everything we do has consequences. So Ecological footprint basically tells you how many earths are required if everyone starts living as per your lifestyle..........

Today, humanity's Ecological Footprint is over 23% larger than what the planet can regenerate. In other words, it now takes more than one year and two months for the Earth to regenerate what we use in a single year. When resources are consumed faster than they are produced or renewed, the resource is depleted and eventually used up!!What I would suggest is that you take a Ecological Footprint Quiz and find out how many Earth's you require... And then there is lots of information available on how by making minor alterations in your lifestyle you can reduce your Ecological Footprint.

Go ahead and make a difference to our Mother Nature :)Jai GurudevLoveJeet

Mid Night Post

This post I am pasting sharp at the mis night. Today the day was awesome. Just lovely. I enjoyed a lot. First was sleeping till 12 in d noon n then after getting up had my launch n then was listening to Vikram Bhiya’s songs. In the evenin I went out to carter road n at the end of carter road I saw few people smoking. Was shocked, even when the government has banned it still its out. Thought forget it. I knew if I go n stop them they wouldn’t stop.
Then after having a good meal in the evening ii went for satsang. It was just rocking. After I came from there I called my friend Ronniee. It was his B’Day today. So I had thought of the craziest gift I can ever gift. So what I did is I told my friend to get a condom and a choclate. We put the choclate inside the condom n wrapped it properly. N we gifted it.
Finally after having all d fun I was outside my room on phone n when I came back what I saw was Ronniee was Drinking WHISKY. And I was as if ohh man aaj bhi. Come on man its ur B’Day and u r killing urself on tht day. I mean what r u upto guys??? The person who neber drinks is drinking on his B’Day callin it a ENJOYMENT. I mean its horrible. Even after me educating him tht u shld not drink still he is knowing the side effects of it.

I AM PROUD OF MY GURU….
My guru Shri Shri Ravi Shankar has traveled to more than 150 countries and he has never ever boozed or smoked. Beign I the western countries he neva did wrong thngs in fact he thought people not to smoke and drink. And even if people don’t listen to him still he takes care of him.
GURUJI U ARE GREAT…. I LOVE U A LOT…

Importance of GURU !!

Have u ever realized the importance of guru in your life??? If u don’t have a guru in life then I don’t know what kind of experience u r missing. The guru can be anyone- your mom, dad, any friend, or any1. You just need to trust your guru as u do trust in yourself n then all your problems or happiness will be divided in 2 parts and you’ll be more happy n less sad.

Like if I give u my example, I never use to believe in these guru n all. Even I use to say what crap yaar if u have a guru all problems r solved? No way. But since the time I hav a guru SHRI SHRI RAVI SHANKARJI my life’s great. I don’t say that there are no problems but it’s very easy to solve it. I enjoy those problems rather sitting and crying.

Yes its true that u have to continue to do your work and not just depend on guruji to do it. If u do your work properly then only guruji will give u his grace.

Like the recent example of mine. I was working for my juries n examples very hard but still was finding myself in mess as jury was suppose to start on Monday n till then also I was not able to complete my work. Even if I would have slogged 24 hours. And finally today I get the news that the juries are postponed for a month.

This doesn’t mean that I will stop working and enjoy now. Now I have got more time to improve my work and again get more grace from Guruji.

Guys this is just a small example I have got many many more such example. Some people come and ask me that “O U BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?” and my answer was “BELIEVE??? I LIVE COZ OF MIRACLES.”

Trust me people do get a guru in life and just c the change.

BONGO

As demamded by one of my blog followers.. i here go ahead n give u more info abt bongo... thnx alot vivek for passin comments occasionally on d blog. this helps me too to improve it.. keep commenting....

Bongo drums
or bongos are a percussion instrument made up of two small drums attached to each other. The drums are of different size. The larger drum is called a hembra (Spanish: female) and the smaller drum is called a macho.

Types of bongos

The two small drums that make up Bongos are typically made of wood, metal, or composite materials, attached by a thick piece of wood. The drum head can be made of animal skin or it can be synthetic. Some bongoceros prefer the sound of X-ray film as the head on the macho.

Bongo-like drums with ceramic bodies and goatskin or rawhide heads are found in Morocco where they are known as tbila, as well as in Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries. They can sometimes be found accompanying flamenco and other traditional Spanish music, partially because of the Moorish influence in Spain. Ceramic bongos are more common in the Middle East and Asia than they are in South America; this is because wooden bongos were brought to Cuba during the slave trade.

Playing technique

Bongo drums produce high-pitched sounds, and should be held between the knees with the larger drum on the right when right-handed. They are traditionally played by striking the drumheads with the fingers and palms, although some contemporary compositions require sticks or brushes. Bongos can also be muted by placing part of the hand on top of the head while striking it at the same time. In Cuban music, bongos are usually played by the same musician as the cowbell (Spanish: cencerro). These drums can also be played on a stand, as is the case with concert orchestras and bands.

They have also become a popular instrument among soundtrack writers for movies and television, because of their versatility and high-pitched sounds.

How Important it is to MEDITATE?

There is an ancient story from the Shiva Puranas: Shiva marries Shakti the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. For some reasons Daksha starts to dislike Shiva, and when he arranges a big difficult, elaborate Yagya and celebration, doesn’t invite Shiva and Shakti to particiapte. Shakti sees many devas and devis decked up and smiling, going for the yagya and asks them about their destination and when told about it, is completely surprized she and Shiva were not invited…

After arguing with Shiva about going to the party, she has her way and bejeweled and smiling leaves for her fathers abode… Her father is not happy to see her at all, and insults her and her husband Shiva in front of the entire assembly. Shakti is outraged and immolates herself screaming that she will be born again to wed Shiva, but this time from a father who she can be proud of…

When Shiva hears that his beloved wife is no more, He comes to the scene along with all his ganas and wreaks havoc… the way only Shiva can! It ends with chopping off and spectacular destruction of the head of Daksha Prajapati and a premature ending of the Yagya…

All the gathered assembly then bows down in abject fear and prays to Lord Shiva for mercy and compassion and somehow to make the Yagya complete. Shiva (in his characteristic way) chops off the head of a goat and attaches that to the body of Daksha Prajapati and brings him back to life so that the Yagya can be completed. The Yagya is completed… All praise the glory of Lord Shiva…

That’s a nice story, but it contains a beautiful secret: Daksha Prajapati is the one who is most skillful, the most adept… and that’s required to rule and be the King. Now when there is skill, Shakti (power) will actually even manifest, but will not stay long without the deep, blissful, meditative Shiva tatwa (essence of Shiva)…

Shiva then comes along and chops off the head of Daksha, symbolizing the annihilation of ego and replaces it with a goat’s head. And here the symbolizing is really superb: Shiva is conveying that the most elaborate, difficult Yagya… which requires so much skill and such adeptness can be done even by a goat!… When the presence of Shiva is manifest!!

Guruji added similarly having all the skill in life, all the success, whatever you wish will still make you feel hollow, incomplete unless you also have with all that spirituality and meditation.

He had once said: ” You loose the right to eat if you have not done your meditation for that day!!” (Agar Dhyan nahi kiya, to tumhe khana khane ka koi hak nahi hai!)

Without the essence of Shiva, Life is like a huge elaborate wedding without the bride and the groom… You got everything, the flowers, the music, the dancers, the fragrances, the poojaris, the witnesses, the food, the laughter, the tears, the noise, the confusion, the gifts, the jewelry… everything needed for the perfect wedding… but with the bride and groom missing, there would be no point…

Laugh, Sing, Dance, Meditate… (Remember to do Seva as well!:))

Snails On Face.....

She broke the world record by having 25 snails crawl over her face. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

On a separate note, apparently the trail they leave has anti-aging substances so it's often used in creams. You could try this to get the real deal. :-)

It's a great photo though. Full story here.

The Festival Of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi (Lord Ganesh’s Birthday) is celebrated on the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapad (August / September). Chaturthi signifies that on this day Ganesh’s energy had reached the earth for the first time and He was born. It denotes Turyavastha - a state beyond Jagruti (The State of Waking), Svapna (Dream) and Sushupti (Deep Sleep).

Though this is popularly believed to be Lord Ganesh’s birthday but it is stated in mythologies that this is the celebration of one of Lord Ganesh’s many incarnations-Mayureshwar. This incarnation of the Lord is explained comprehensively in AshtaVinayak Yatra-Pilgrimage To The Eight Effigies Of Lord Ganesh. The rituals and worship during Ganesh Chaturthi helps mankind to get closer to Him.

The Origin:
This festival gained importance during the rule of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great ruler of the Maratha Empire (1627-1680). After him, the Peshwas took over the reigns under the guidance of Bajirao Peshwa (1721- 1740) and Lord Ganesh was their Ishta Devta (Family Deity). It is said that in 1815 when Bajirao II was in power that was the last time this festival was celebrated with great pomp. After the decline of the Peshwa rule (1818-1892) this celebration was restricted only to the families living in the state of Maharasthra.

The Sarvajanik Puja (Worship made available to people from every walk of life) of Lord Ganesh was started in 1893 by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Pune. He was keen to form a self government and put an end to the British rule. “Swaraj (Home Rule) Is My Birthright” was his slogan and a way of keeping up the spirit of freedom. His newspaper Kesari helped to kindle the flame of independence among the common man. Tilak used Ganesh Chaturthi to unite people from different caste and community, and encouraged them to join in to liberate the nation. The history of freedom struggle cannot be complete until one recalls Tilak’s immense contributions – as the father of the National Movement and an uplifter of the downtrodden.

Modern Times:
The idols for the festival are made of mud, then painted and adorned in beautiful clothes and jewels. Modernization has lead to mass production and the mud has been replaced in many places with plaster of paris for making them on a larger scale. The idol can bought and consecrated at home provided the family members follow correct Vidhi (Methods of Worship.) These vidhis are mentioned in the Mudgala Purana volume four, chapter seven, originally explained by Sage Kanva to King Dushyant. (This story can be read in the epic of Mahabharata. King Dushyant had married Shakuntala who was the foster daughter of Sage Kanva. The Mahaganapati deity at Titwala, Maharashtra was consecrated by Sage Kanva. It is said that King Dushyant and Shakuntala had married here.) This provides as a guideline for the appropiate understanding of the worship.
The idol is brought home a day prior to Chaturthi. This day is known as Hartalik where the women fast and pray to His mother, Goddess Gauri / Parvati as she is also known as the goddess of harvest. The families who bring home an idol do not consume non-vegetarian food and refrain from activities that stimulate the senses until the festivities end. The second day of Ganesh Utsav (Festival) is called Rishi Panchami. Rishi’s are the sages of India who led a simple life of growing their own food and spent the rest of their time in teaching, meditation and spiritual discourses. This day is celebrated to remind us of our ancient culture and heritage. The cattle are also revered on this day and the ones who work in the fields are given a day off. They are fed fruits and vegetables for their sincere and unconditional service. Lord Ganesh’s mouse, the divine attendant is not forgotten. Boiled gram is offered as Naivedyam to the Lord’s Vahan. As a symbolism, the rats in the vicinity are also fed with this.
